Scenarios and spending strategies
How scenarios store only what you change, how to compare up to four side by side, and how the spending strategies comparison works.
Scenarios
A scenario is a version of your plan that keeps only what you change. Everything else follows your base plan. If you later update your base plan, a scenario picks up the change unless it has its own value for that field.
On the Scenarios screen:
- New scenario creates one from your base plan.
- For each scenario, choose Edit, Branch from this, Duplicate or Delete.
- While you edit a scenario, the plan editor and every screen show that scenario. Choose Stop editing the scenario to go back to your base plan.
The scenario selector in the top bar switches between Base plan and your scenarios from any screen.
Compare side by side
Pick up to four plans to compare. The comparison shows:
- chance your money lasts
- net worth late in the plan, in the middle outcome and the worst 1 in 10
- lifetime taxes
- lifetime spending
- what's left to heirs after taxes
Every plan in the comparison faces the same simulated markets.
The free plan includes a limited number of saved scenarios. Paid plans have no limit. Scenarios you already have are never removed.
Spending strategies
The Spending strategies compared screen runs your plan with different rules for setting retirement spending. Pick up to four:
| Strategy | How spending is set |
|---|---|
| Steady | The same inflation-adjusted amount every year |
| Risk-based guardrails | Changes when the chance of a future cut becomes too high or low |
| Guyton–Klinger | Cuts or raises when the withdrawal rate drifts too far from the starting rate |
| Percent of portfolio | A set share of the portfolio each year, with limits on yearly changes |
| Spend down by 95 | Spends the portfolio down over the remaining years |
| Smooth living standard | Keeps a level standard of living per adult, recalculated each year |
| Safe floor with upside | Protects a spending floor, then adds spending from growth |
| Skip raises after down years | Steady spending, without the inflation raise after a losing year |
Each strategy card shows results on the same simulated markets. Use this strategy sets it in your plan. Walk through history with your strategy replays it from a historical start year you choose.
Spending strategies are a paid feature. Each is the app's own implementation of a published method, and isn't endorsed by the method's authors.
