Accounts

The Accounts screen lists every account, grouped By type or By owner.

  • Add an account asks for the type, owner, balance and, for taxable accounts, cost basis. You can also set paycheck contributions and where the account sits in your withdrawal order.
  • Each account shows its Money in and out and its holdings.
  • Select accounts to delete removes one or several accounts in one undoable step. Anything that referred to them, such as contributions, conversions, rules and targets, is removed or switched off at the same time.

Account types include cash, taxable brokerage, traditional and Roth workplace plans and IRAs, HSAs, 529 plans, annuities, deferred compensation and life insurance cash value.

Holdings

Holdings are optional. Without them, each account grows at its assumed mix. With them, the allocation screens can show what you really own. Enter holdings by hand or with Import holdings from a spreadsheet. See importing and exporting.

Asset allocation and location

The Asset allocation and location screen has five tabs:

TabWhat it shows
TodayYour current mix of stocks, bonds, cash and other assets
US and internationalA finer split, looking through funds to their underlying holdings
Target vs actualYour holdings against a target you define, with rebalancing bands
Asset locationWhich account types hold each part of your mix
Over timeHow your mix changes through the plan

Look-through

The app looks through common index and target-date funds using their providers' published breakdowns. A total-world fund, for example, is split into US, developed and emerging-market stocks. Holdings it can't classify are listed so you can classify them. Your answer is remembered for that ticker. See how the look-through works.

Targets

On Target vs actual, build a target from sleeves that add up to 100%. Start from Start from what you hold, Start from your plan's mix or Start from scratch. A sleeve can be a set of asset classes or specific tickers.

Each sleeve has a band. By default it's 5 percentage points or 25% of the target, whichever is smaller. Sleeves outside their band are flagged.

Moves that would bring each sleeve to target lists trades for three cases: no new money, adding money, or taking money out. Moves use new money first, then exchanges inside tax-advantaged accounts, then sales in taxable accounts with the smallest gains. They're for information only, not investment or tax advice.

Use as projection mix applies your target to the projections. You can undo it.
