Plot My Money and Boldin compared

How Plot My Money and Boldin (formerly NewRetirement) compare on simulations, taxes, account linking, AI, pricing and switching, from Boldin's own pages.

Last checked

Boldin, formerly NewRetirement, and Plot My Money are both consumer retirement planners with a free plan and a paid plan. Boldin puts weight on linked accounts, an AI assistant and access to human planners. Plot My Money puts weight on tax detail, simulations and planning areas such as estate and deferred pay. This page uses Boldin's own published pages.

Who each one is for

Boldin offers a free Basic plan and a paid PlannerPlus plan with its full set of planning tools. Boldin Advisors adds a flat-fee plan checkup with a CFP® professional (pricing).

Plot My Money is for US households planning for retirement or already retired. It shows what's safe to spend each month, tests the plan across thousands of simulated markets, and plans taxes, Social Security and withdrawals year by year. It runs in a browser on phones and computers, and has an Advisor plan for planners who work with clients.

Notes on the table

  • Monte Carlo, stress testing, Roth conversion tools and the Social Security explorer are listed under PlannerPlus (pricing).
  • Boldin's Monte Carlo runs 1,000 iterations, with returns drawn from a normal distribution (Monte Carlo help). Plot My Money runs up to 1,000 simulated markets on the free plan and up to 10,000 on Plus.
  • Boldin's assumptions page says Basic plans use a flat 3% state tax rate. It also says Boldin doesn't calculate NIIT, AMT, or estate, gift or generation-skipping taxes (assumptions help).
  • QCDs are entered as a deductible one-time expense in January. We didn't find donor-advised funds (QCD help).
  • Equity compensation covers RSUs, PSUs, options, ESPPs and ESOPs. You enter the taxes yourself through income and expense entries, and Boldin says it doesn't model AMT (equity compensation help).
  • Long-term care costs are modeled by default for the last 28 months of life. We didn't find a life or disability insurance needs analysis (assumptions help).
  • Deferred compensation is entered with workarounds, such as lump-sum pension entries (deferred compensation help).
  • Reports: Boldin describes a print report and a data download, without naming PDF, CSV or Excel (download or print help).
  • Phones: Boldin's devices page lists supported phone browsers and doesn't mention store apps (devices and browsers help). Plot My Money is an installable web app, not a store app.
  • Boldin Advisors is a planning service for households, not software for advisors (pricing).
  • Plot My Money doesn't link accounts. You enter balances by hand or import them from files.

Pricing as published

Plot My Money has a free plan and two paid plans. Plus covers your household, at a yearly price of the amount shown before you subscribe. The Advisor plan covers a set number of client households, at a yearly price of the amount shown before you subscribe. Until paid plans go on sale, every feature is included for every household. See plans and billing.

Boldin (from its pricing page, checked November 5, 2026):

  • Basic: free.
  • PlannerPlus: $14 a month or $168 a year, billed annually at $168 after a 14-day free trial.
  • Boldin Advisors: a $3,200 flat fee for a one-time retirement plan checkup with a CFP® professional.

Where Boldin is stronger

  • Linked accounts. PlannerPlus includes connected accounts that keep balances current (pricing).
  • An AI assistant. Boldin AI answers questions, proposes plan updates you confirm, and reads figures from statements you upload (Boldin AI help).
  • Human help in the same product. Boldin offers a flat-fee plan checkup with a CFP® professional (pricing).
  • A document vault. PlannerPlus includes an encrypted vault for documents (pricing).
  • More types of equity pay. Its help page covers PSUs and ESOPs as well as RSUs, options and ESPPs (equity compensation help).

Who should pick which

  • Pick Boldin if you want your accounts linked so balances stay current.
  • Pick Boldin if you want an AI assistant, or the option of a flat-fee review with a CFP® professional.
  • Pick Plot My Money if you want taxes calculated in more detail, including AMT, NIIT and estate taxes.
  • Pick Plot My Money if you want spending strategies compared on the same markets, and rules you write tested in every simulated market.
  • Pick Plot My Money if your plan includes deferred compensation, insurance needs or state estate taxes, modeled directly rather than with workarounds.

How to switch

Plot My Money doesn't import Boldin files, so you set up your plan again. Have your latest balances, pay, spending and Social Security estimates to hand.

  1. Start a plan and answer the setup questions about your household, income, spending and accounts.
  2. If you have a holdings file, import it as Excel or CSV on the Accounts screen.
  3. Add Social Security from your SSA statement, plus pensions and any other income.
  4. Compare the results with your old plan. Differences usually come from assumptions about returns, inflation, taxes and spending.

You can download your plan as a JSON file at any time. See getting started and importing and exporting.

Boldin's help center describes a data download from its full plan view, which can help you copy figures across (download or print help).
